We go au naturel!

Got your attention right?
Well, let’s first have a little French lesson:

“Au Naturel”:

Adjective:
  1. With no elaborate treatment, dressing, or preparation: “I wear my hair au naturel these days”.
  2. (humorous) Naked.

We are highlighting definition 1 in this here post ;-)

So what are we on about?  Well, we thought it a good idea to share some feedback on the products that we are currently using at home.  We are so often stunned by the effectiveness of natural and organic products that we thought it would be great to share some first hand feedback on some of our ranges – just to give you some added information to use during your next shopping trip…

Without further ado, let’s start in the kitchen:

Working from left to right, we found the following hiding under the kitchen sink:

Better Earth Cleaning Spray:
For use on kitchen counters, walls, stove tops and glass surfaces, not only does this product smell divine, it does the job perfectly (and we are qualified to say this as we have clever dogs that try to open our glass sliding door from the outside, every day!  Needless to say, the door gets cleaned every afternoon – and it sparkles!).  Have we mentioned that it lasts just about forever?

Better Earth Tile and Floor Cleaner:
As effective as traditional tile cleaners (but much better smelling due to the lack of harsh chemicals), this floor cleaner leaves our tiles sparkling and our home smelling all citrusy..  Always remember to shake well before use though, as natural ingredients tend to separate.   Other than that, it is a breeze to use.

Earthsap Dishwashing Liquid:
Cost effective and easy to use, Earthsap’s Dishwashing Liquid is a must in all homes.  We found this product to be a bit watery, but once you get your mind around the “shake before use” principle, it does a fantastic job.  A lot of our customers use it by pouring directly onto sponge before washing, but we have found that it works just as well when added to hot water and shaking it up to foam before washing.

Better Earth Bathroom and Toilet Cleaner:
Our customers love this product due to the smell and effectiveness!  Our domestic is sold on it, and we have clean, hygenic bathroom and toilet surfaces.  It seems this one sells itself!

Better Earth Laundry Liquid:
If you are not using a Biowash Ball (which is a great way to save money while cleaning close effectively), then this is the product for you.  We’ve found that even after clothes come out of the dryer it still retains the great smell left behind by this product.  And it saves you money too as it has a built in softener, so no need to add anything but the Laundry Liquid.  An added tip is that we’ve found that we need a lot less per wash than what is stated on the bottle, so it last very long.

On to a few items found in the bathroom (form left to right, back to front):

Ecoco Face and Body Wash:
First tip:  As we use this in the shower, we changed the top of our conditioner bottle with the top of this bottle – makes for easier flow :-)  This Avo and Lime wash smells so fresh, and as you use very little for each wash it lasts forever.  Cleans and foams nicely so it leaves you feeling perfectly polished…

Earthsap Pomegranate Conditioner:
Our customers keep raving about the Earthsap hair products, so we thought “right, lets give the conditioner for dry hair a bash!”  (hence the 2 ranges of conditioner found in the shower stall).
This works a charm!  No really, having naturally curly hair, this conditioner gives the most perfectly defined curls.  I dare say I have never had such frizz free curls..   Just beautiful!

Treemendus Conditioner:
When we got this range we tried it as it gets great reviews for treatment of dry and itchy scalp.  In light of that, it does the job perfectly, but we found the conditioner to be a bit watery.  The great thing is that we now mix the Earthsap Pomegranate with this product, and whala!  No more itchy scalp, and great frizz free curls…

Treemendus Shampoo:
Again, a very good product for itchy scalp.  As it is in its very simple, organic form, it doesnt foam a lot.  But as we all know, the foam in traditional hair and body products are caused by chemicals added specifically for this affect.  Needless to say, a healthier, more risk free product (like this one) takes some getting used to.  But then, it is all worth it!

Naturals Beauty Sensual Body Oil:
This is a great moisturising body oil (especially for dry winter skin).  It’s got a strong rosy smell – which is just yummy – and it leaves your skin soft and nourished.  Use it any which way you like.  It is a sensual body oil after all :-)

Earthsap Rosemary and Lavender Roll on:
Never in this lifetime would we have thought that a natural, chemical free roll on would work so well!  It really leaves your underarms smelling fresh.  And best of all, it lasts!  Try it – we bet you’d be converted.

Oh Lief Insect Balm:
Oh Lief has some great baby and body products – all olive oil based and therefore naturally moisturising.  But this one seems to make its appearance all around our house!  With Citronella and Lemongrass, this insect balm works 100%, and smells nice.  And we’re qualified to confirm this as we live on a wetland and have no mosquito bites to sow for it!  This is a winner, and safe for kids 6 months and over too!

Naturals Beauty Sugar Scrub:
This white sugar scrub will last you very, very long.  It scrubs and buffs away old skin nicely, leaves your skin moisturised and soft instead of dry, and smells subtly lovely.  We sometimes wonder if we even need to put a cream on after our scrub as this one products seems to do the trick all by itself..

We hope this little “share-a-thon” has been useful, and that the personal feedback can be used to inform future purchases.  And dont hesitate to leave a comment or post a review of any of these or other great products that you might have used – shared feedback is after all so useful to all :-)

Off to go do some “au naturel” cleaning now (and no, only the cleaning material will be “au naturel” – giggle, giggle)

Waxing lyrical about Beeswax…

So we’ve posted about the benefits of Raw Honey (a must read if you want to know more about good old natural skin care), and naturally thought that we need to follow this up with a post about the benefits and uses of beeswax.

So what is it really?  Well, beeswax is the six-sided shells (or storage units if you like) created by the honey bees to house the honey.  The honey farmer extracts raw honey from these units, and the left over units (i.e. the beeswax), gets melted for use in lotions, soaps, balms etc.

“Yes, thanks for stating the obvious – but what’s the buzz”, we hear you ask…  Long story short, healthy, glowing, naturally fresh skin…

Here’s the round up of benefits;

Beeswax is a protectant:  Acting as a surfactant, beeswax blended into cold creams and other skin lotions, forms a protective barrier on the surface of the skin. This barrier provides a film of protection against irritants while still allowing the skin to breathe.

It is also a skin healer:  Like other beehive products, including honey and royal jelly, beeswax offers anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral benefits, making it potentially beneficial for treating minor skin irritations.  Great for burns, insect bites and the like…

And it softens skin:  When added to skin care products, beeswax acts as an emollient and a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin and sealing it in, reports Botanical.com. Beeswax also contains vitamin A, which may be beneficial in softening and rehydrating dry skin, while also assisting in cell reconstruction.

Lastly, it is antibacterial:  Beeswax may have mild antibacterial properties, according to a 2005 study conducted at Dubai Specialized Medical Center in the United Arab Emirates.  Their honey/beeswax mixture used for their tests inhibited the growth of bacteria and fungus, making beeswax, along with honey, potentially beneficial in the treatment of diaper rash and other bacterial skin conditions.

Yes, yes, great in theory, but how does it really work we hear you asking…  Ask no more.  We’ve tried and tested some awesome products containing beeswax, and we are convinced.  One hundred percent!  Our use of the honey and beeswax face balm, made by Bee Natural, made an instant difference to the softness and feel of our facial skin.  Not only this, but (pause, touch wood) our skins have been much clearer (no random break-outs at our place any more – whoo ha!)

We stock various natural and organic ranges that use beeswax in their products (Oh Lief and Bee Natural being 2 brands that use this ingredient extensively), so next time you are shopping for your natural skin care products, remember to have a closer look at the ingredients – and if you happen to buy something with beeswax in, do take a sec to thank the bees because they are just awesome!

Organic, Free Range, Grain-fed, Grass-fed… what’s the deal?

This one is for the non-vegetarians out there…

So we had some family members over for dinner last night, and them being ex-farmers, the topic of free-range and organic meats came up.  And what a discussion it was!  Naturally, we thought we’d share…

Interestingly, the first thing I found totally amazing was the fact that some of the leading retailers (names shall not be mentioned :-) ) that heavily promote the fact that they stock a variety of free-range meats, considered a 4m x 4m space for an ostrich to roam in, sufficient enough to label it “free range”.  Shock, horror!  It made me think that the wool (get it, wool..) is really pulled over our eyes on these issues.  Can we really trust what we buy (and tend to pay more for)?

My total amazement at this aside, lets focus on the topic at hand..

It seems that a lot of people are confused about the difference between free-range and organic meats.  Fear not!  We shall explain.

All organic animals are by nature free-range, but not all free-range animals are organic.  Let me explain: free-range animals live natural lives, roaming on the land, interacting with one another and eating only plant-based foods.  However, free-range animals may be treated by conventional veterinary methods when sick. In addition, while they only eat plant-based foods, these are not necessarily organically produced, and may include approved artificial / chemical additives.

On the other hand, organic would imply that the animals live the same “free-range” lifestyle as mentioned above, with the added insurance that the food they eat has been grown without the use of chemical pesticides, and that they are treated in a homoeopathic way – i.e. no growth promoting agents, or antibiotics are used to treat them.

As if this is not complicated enough, we still have to consider grain-fed vs grass-fed…  Phew!

In short, grass-fed animals are seen as roaming freely and feeding off the pastures, often indicating that they are raised without added hormones and antibiotics.  Grain-fed animals on the other hand are fed using feedlots, which means they are fed with an eye on fattening them up quickly and cheaply by using genetically modified foods.  As it is not natural for cows to eat grain, this sometimes results in illness, which in turn is treated with antibiotics.  So it is not surprising that it has been shown that grass-fed beef is of a superior nutritional quality.

A lot to take in, we know!  And as not everything is regulated in SA yet, it is important for us as consumers to ask questions, investigate, and demand answers from retailers stocking these various ranges of foods.

For added peace of mind, get your meat, cheese, eggs and veg from farmers markets, or even better, organic box delivery companies like Wild Organics in Cape Town (http://www.wildorganics.co.za/), or Organic Emporium (http://www.organicemporium.co.za/) in Gauteng.

Hope we’ve helped – oh, and the dinner last night was way yummy, and very much organic :-)

Make an awesome face and body scrub – naturally

We have to admit:  we’re the type that buys, not makes…  But we found this awesome article on wikihow.com that shows exactly how to make your own natural scrub at home. Thought it would be great to share with those of you inclined to jump in and try this great recipe :-)

Check this out – it is too easy!

Take one cup of brown sugar and place it in a medium mixing bowl.

Add one cup of white sugar and mix together.

Add one cup of white sugar and mix together.

Slowly add sweet almond oil to the sugar until it starts to look like a thick paste.

Add a few drops of orange essential oil, fragrance oil, or soap fragrance until it smells just right.

Put it in a decorative jar and give it as a gift, or enjoy it yourself.

It couldnt be easier!

Some tips and tricks for using natural scrubs:

  • Use this scrub twice a week on wet skin. Gently rub dry or dull patches with a small palm full of scrub. Avoid rubbing too hard, as it can cause irritation.
  • If your skin is really dry, you need to exfoliate. This means remove the dead skin. But since scrubbing can be rough on skin, take the following test first to make sure you need to do it.
  • Take a piece of scotch tape and press it onto your forehead. Gently peel it off and look at the tape. If it looks really dull and has a lot of flaky stuff on it, your skin is ready for a good scrub. Use a gentle scrub like the recipe above, or wash your face with a natural sponge and a mild soap. Be gentle or your skin may get raw and irritated. After you exfoliate, your skin will look much healthier.

Now you have no more excuses when it comes to having lovely skin – and if the recession has been hitting hard, you now also have a great way to make the perfect present!

Enjoy!

Honey, you’re a beaut!

So we’ve decided to try and test some of the new honey based products that we have in store this last weekend…

We mean really – if the product claims that you will see a difference after the first use, you’ve gotta just try it for yourself because surely that is not true?  So off we went, jar of Face Balm in bag, very nervous that we will just be plastering our faces with, (although all natural) oily ingredients, causing breakouts and all things bad…

Alas, we were wrong!  And apologies to our manufacturers for being a bit sceptical to start off with – we have put these products on discount so as to punish ourselves for our doubts :-)  General consensus is that our faces felt so soft after applying these balms after our nightly face washing routines.  So the next logical step was to find out a bit more about the benefits of honey and what it can do for your skin.  Herewith our humbling findings…

  • Raw honey helps speed up the skin’s natural regeneration processes (so it is also a good product to use on cuts and burns, as it speeds up recovery and minimizes scarring)
  • Raw honey contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), which increases elasticity and stimulates collagen production.  (Now you may ask, where have I heard this term “AHA” before?  Well, from all the expensive, chemical based skin care companies that advertise it as their star ingredient that helps you look younger.  They really do make it sound like a thousand scientists were involved in the creation of this special ingredient – well, in fact there were…  1000+ bees, yes!)
  • The amino acids in honey is a natural skin moisturizer, while the honey also has natural exfoliation properties.
  • The antioxidants in honey also assists in reversing the effect of skin damage.
  • Not only does honey contain all these benefits, it is great for all skin types – nourishing dry skins and balancing oily skins.

Rarely do we post so enthusiastically about a new product that we’ve tried and tested, so it has to be said that we are in love, converted, and loyal honey-based skin care users!

And…  being so excited about our new find, we also researched some natural honey recipes and ideas for you.  So go on, try this at home if you are so inclined – it will make your skin feel fabulous!

Bath time:

Add 1/4 cup of honey for a fragrant bath that leaves your skin yummiliscious

Hair Time:

Add 1 teaspoon of honey to 4 cups of warm water.  After shampooing hair, pour the mixture through hair.  Do not rinse out, dry as normal (blondes, add a squeeze of lemon to naturally lighten your hair as well)

Moisture mask time:

Mix 2 tablespoons honey with 2 teaspoons milk. Smooth over face and throat. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water

Scrub time:

Mix 1 tablespoon honey with 2 tablespoons finely ground almonds and ½ teaspoon lemon juice. Rub gently onto body. Rinse off with warm water.

So, go on…  try it…  get addicted…

Here’s to the bees!

Trees… we need them!

So, we have this campaign where we are running the Knysna Half Marathon in aid of Food And Trees For Africa (FTFA) right.  But “why?”, we hear you ask.  Well, because our planet is suffering, and just selling eco-friendly goods doesn’t really cut it we think.  So hence the punishing run…

Oh, but don’t worry..  You get to sit on your couch and watch us suffer, as we attempt to offset our carbon footprints together.  Yip – we run, you relax knowing that you’ve donated a tree to a very dry and arid area in our country.  Easy!  But there is more to this than “just planting a tree to soothe the good old conscious”.  Read more:

Deforestation (the chopping down of indigenous trees for land development, firewood use etc) , or desertification (the overuse of already dry soil by, for example livestock grazing) has become an issue that most people need to be aware of.  Not only because it is a hot topic, but also because it is just another reason for us to be aware of what we buy, how we use it, and what the affect on the planet is.

In short, the planting of a tree has become more than just a method of offsetting ones carbon footprint – caused by a variety of issues like the purchase of imported products (yes, shipping products from China, Asia, or the UK has a major impact on the environment – gasp!).  It has also become a way of replenishing the dry land that we over use for animal grazing.  Why?  Well, because trees hold the soil together and help water the land by channeling rainwater into the soil.  So planting a tree in a relevant area, to either offset carbon footprints or to counter the effect of desertification has become a very important necessity.

A small but meaningful post, we hope we’ve helped you in understanding the impacts of our daily lives on this precious planet…

So go on, support FTFA through our Run-For-Trees campaign.

More detail on how to donate a tree can be found here:  http://www.ecoemporium.co.za/social-responsibility/
